At least 13 people perish and ninety-eight hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship government projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” declared the head of state.

The president reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the year before. This project was closely associated with his government's economic goals for the southeastern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The building of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its duties in public infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid pace, defying expectations to be partially opened before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party demanded an prompt pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This pause was proposed pending a full technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."

In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been running in full accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and management of these vital projects.
