Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who come off popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a leading health publication shows that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Users using such treatments must be aware of the danger of quick weight regain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally see a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Issue?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have stopped the jabs report a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said a patient.
This difficulty is compounded if users have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Significant Use
Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among females than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success relies on integrated behavioural management.
