Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when multiple of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved

Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a method that is highly susceptible to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that this activity become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."

Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
