The Global Health Body Raises Concern Over Critical Lack of Obesity Medications

Fewer than one in 10 individuals who could benefit from GLP-1 drugs such as Wegovy are able to get them, warns the WHO as it publishes its initial advice on the medications.

Given more than one billion individuals worldwide currently classified as obese, it is urging increased and just access to these injectable treatments.

Per forecasts, in excess of 2,000,000,000 are projected to be living with obesity by 2030 unless action is taken.

"The new guidance recognises that excess weight is a lifelong illness that can be treated with holistic and ongoing treatment," remarked the agency's head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Significant expense, limited production capacity, and distribution challenges are key hurdles to widespread availability to the injections that can aid individuals in losing significant body mass, explains the body.

GLP-1 Therapy Shortage

Even under the present most optimistic case, the production of these medications could only cover approximately 100 million people – less than 10% of the global need, as stated by the health organization.

The guideline calls on countries and companies to expand availability, via approaches including patent sharing.

Exclusive production rights on a key compound – the main component of the drug Wegovy – is scheduled to end in a number of countries in 2026.

The Way Weight-Loss Injections Function

The injections mimick a body's own hormone to reduce digestion speed, curb appetite and boost feelings of fullness so individuals eat less.

Patients typically start to lose weight in the initial weeks of starting on the weekly injections.

Research points to people may regain a significant portion after a year of halting the drug, because their typical food cravings return.

To be above a healthy weight elevates your likelihood for contracting health problems, like diabetes, heart disease, brain attack, and some malignancies.

Excess weight affects people in all nations and was associated with millions of deaths worldwide in 2024, as per the health agency.
