Trump's Woke Alarm Overlooks Europe's True Threat: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's security policy document offers a misguided view of the European Union. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and so-called "progressive" agendas represent an existential threat to the continent's identity. However, this argument is based on a fundamental misreading of the situation. The actual danger facing Europe is not societal but technological and economic lag.

A Glaring Growth Gap Between Europe and the US

Statistics reveal a stark picture. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by 87%, compared to a mere 13.5% growth for the EU. Over this period, European income per person dropped from over three-quarters to just half of the US level. Remarkably, even Mississippi now boasts a higher per capita income than several leading European economies like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly 50% of the world’s top fifty technology firms are US-based, while only four are from Europe.

The Innovation Shortfall: The Core Problem

This widening economic gap is driven by stronger productivity growth in the United States, largely due to breakthroughs and better use of resources. The landscape of global tech dominance is overwhelmingly American. In the last fifty years, hundreds of American startups have scaled into companies valued at over ten billion dollars, versus just 14 in the European continent.

This gap prompts a pressing issue: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, what is Europe positioned? Experts widely agree it is largely a two-horse race involving the United States and China, with European nations starting at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Technological Lag

A number of major reasons explain this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a much more robust and more dynamic network for funding startups. Europe still lacks a genuine capital markets union, a factor that limits the scale of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided regulation hamper European business. A American entrepreneur can launch a service under a single set of laws to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population size, is split among 27 different national systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward risk-taking differ sharply. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was once met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has eroded its ability in pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, there are reasons for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have started to advance substantial change. Notable reports on EU competitiveness and the single market point to the need for major reforms.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths could support much higher degrees of commercial innovation.

The continent retains significant advantages: skilled human capital, excellent education systems, and world-class labs. Coupled with a large internal market and high savings rates, these elements could unleash a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not become the leader in developing next-generation technologies, it can still dramatically increase economic output by implementing and tailoring innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a critical crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, the continent's technological decline has been steady. But, without decisive action to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could give way to a rapid and permanent loss of world influence.
