Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements from skipper Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered those words in several conversations following his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes series against Australia previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

However, following Crawley made 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "weak men" observation after his side were beaten in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The team afterwards went on a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his team had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from Stokes and head coach McCullum had stayed in line with their prior three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do something special going into this Test."

Australia Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on the last day to secure an unassailable three-nil advantage after three matches played.

Defeat will extend England's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes series defeat.

This series is set to be decided in only eleven days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," admitted Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been difficult. They're a formidable team. It was always going to be hard touring here against them. They entered as the front-runners and they've proven why."

Pope's Place In Question

While the opener's performance in Adelaide probably answers questions about his short-term future in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 runs in the team's second knock on Saturday, extending his modest returns versus Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and averages 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

However, Crawley said any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "the media" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There's no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," he concluded.
